CINCINNATI — The food desert of Bond Hill will soon get a new oasis. A minority-owned group broke ground on the new Bond Hill Market Wednesday.

The group Community Economic Advancement Initiatives will convert an abandoned building on California Avenue into a grocery store.

The group said it focuses on developing historically Black neighborhoods at an affordable cost.

“We can get grants, low-interest or no-interest loans, in order to be able to do development. Then we can keep the prices down on housing that we’re going to do and in this market, for example,” said Gene Ellington, president, and DEO of Community Economic Advancement Initiatives.

The Bond Hill Market will offer fresh meat, vegetables, fruit, and other groceries. An internet cafe will offer free WiFi and culinary students will serve hot meals.

Community Economic Advancement Initiatives also plan to build townhouses across the street from the market.
